14 Dec 09: There are reports that the White House has threatened closing Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base unless Senator Nelson (D-Nebraska) gets in line with supporting health care reform in the Senate. This action could have a disastrous impact on the country’s national security since Offutt is a major part of our defenses and one of the most technologically advanced military bases in the country (note that this was the secure base where President Bush was flown after the 9/11 attacks). If this “thug” politics is true, there should be drastic consequences for those involved. Can extorting a vote and putting the country in danger be considered “treason”? I think so.
You should know that I would vote according to my principles and my constituents’ desires, even in the face of tremendous opposition. In addition, if my opponents were to cross the line as far as the rule of law is concerned, I would take appropriate action. My votes will not be able to be bought or extorted. I feel that as a Congressman I would have a sacred duty to do what is best for my constituents and for my country, no matter what consequences from the opposition I may have to endure.
