30 Dec 09: The recent terrorist attack on a plane to Detroit is clear evidence of the absurdity of the Obama administration’s intent to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facilities and to repatriate many of the current detainees back to their home countries. The plotters include two former detainees who were released in November 2007 for an “art therapy rehabilitation program” in Saudi Arabia and then were set free. The United States is allowing hard-core terrorists to leave Guantanamo to be “rehabilitated” in a program that includes paints and crayons! If the situation were not so dire, this would be a joke. As it is, it is life threatening – to you and to me, and certainly to the passengers of Flight 253 to Detroit.
According to the Pentagon, there are another 27 former Guantanamo detainees who have resumed terrorist activities after their release. The Pentagon has prepared a new report on recidivism among Guantanamo detainees, but will not provide details to the public.
I am in favor of keeping Guantanamo Bay open for enemy combatants. These individuals should be tried in military tribunals and not in civilian courts on U.S. soil.
