11 Jan 10: The income tax, including payroll withholding taxes, should be abolished and replaced by the “Fair Tax,” which is a kind of national sales tax (see more about the “Fair Tax” at www.fairtax.org). First, however, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, which is the basis for the imposition of the income tax, must be repealed. We do not want to be in a situation where politicians stop the income tax by legislation and replace it with the Fair Tax, and then, in a grab for more money, reinstate the income tax while keeping the Fair Tax. The power to tax income would have to be eliminated when the Fair Tax is adopted. Onerous taxes place an untenable burden on individuals, families and businesses. As a result, the economy suffers and job creation suffers.
In a recent C-SPAN interview, IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman admitted that he uses an outside party to prepare his tax returns because he finds the tax code “complex.” He noted that “Congress writes the tax laws.”
In Congress, I will work to simplify our tax system and lower taxes. History shows that lowering taxes stimulates the economy, which then increases government revenues. I will work to make this happen.
